WELCOME TO MARIMBAFEST 2025

Marimbafest is the best event I've ever attended, I made outstanding friends from all over the world, grew a lot of knowledge from the masterclass, and was touched by the teacher's performance, it's a blessed week, and I've left wonderful memories with everyone on my first visit to Perth!

ABOUT

SIX YEARS, SIX MARIMBAFESTS.
THIS TIME, WE'VE MADE IT EVEN BETTER.

After hosting over 250 participants from 15 countries over the last five instalments, Marimbafest 2025 combines a full competition with festival-style masterclasses and performances - there's something for everyone.
WHEN AND WHERE IS IT?

Saturday 12th July 2025 to Saturday 19th July 2025
live and in-person here in Perth (Boorloo), Australia at the
Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA)
(2 Bradford Road, Mount Lawley WA 6050, Australia)
DO I HAVE TO BE THERE FOR THE WHOLE WEEK?

For 2025, we've split Marimbafest Week into two halves -
you can come to just the competition, just the masterclasses or enjoy the entire week with us:

MARIMBAFEST 2025 SOLO & ENSEMBLE COMPETITION:
Saturday 12th July morning to Wednesday 16th July evening
MARIMBAFEST 2025 MASTERCLASSES AND CONCERTS:
Thursday 17th July morning to Saturday 19th July evening
This means if you can only come to some of the week, you'll get to do exactly what you want!
And if you can come to the whole week, we'll be excited to have you enjoying the full experience.

Participants should aim to arrive one day earlier than the start date of their desired half,
and depart one day later than the end date of their desired half.
You can see the Draft Schedule below for more information on the times.

AND DO I HAVE TO BE THERE IN-PERSON?

Since Marimbafest 2021, Marimbafests have all been hybrid events -
we are still the only event in the world to offer BOTH in-person and online participation at the same time!
We welcome local, interstate and international participants to participate in-person.
If you are planning to visit in-person, please visit our Travel Information page for information about getting here.
For interstate and international participants, you may also participate online from the comfort of your own home for ultimate convenience. Participants who already reside in Western Australia are not able to participate online.
Online participants can benefit from the following:
  • PARTICIPATE LIVE: All masterclasses, competition rounds and concerts are livestreamed through a participant-exclusive Zoom
  • WATCH LATER: If unable to attend at live times, everything is recorded for online participants to download and view later
  • VIDEO SUBMISSION: Online participants submit video submissions to participate in competition, making it easy to join
  • LIVE FEEDBACK: All participants receive live feedback from at least one faculty member, and feedback from all faculty members
  • PRIZES SHIPPED: If online participants win prizes, prizes will be shipped to them

Marimbafest was a truly unforgettable experience that has helped me to see just how deep my love for percussion is, and has given me so much hope for a future in the musical world.

It was incredible to meet so many percussionists from different ages and at different points in their careers, and truly find a place within the percussion world with so many incredible friends and mentors.

FOR ALL IN-PERSON PERFORMANCES
Marimbafest Australia supports the practice of using original copies and editions of sheet music.
Using pirated or illegally obtained sheet music (e.g. Scribd, PDFCoffee) for adjudicator's copies will result in disqualification from the competition.
Other than purchasing the score, sheet music obtained via legal sources such as library loan, educational institution loan or loan from a teacher are acceptable.

Although we encourage memorisation, Participants are permitted to use sheet music on stage if required, whether in print form or electronic form (e.g. iPad/tablet).
Any sheet music used must be either the original published copy, or photocopies/digital copies with a prior sighted original copy/purchase receipt.
Participants must not perform a work different to their initial choices of repertoire, unless given prior permission to do so.
All repertoire performed for SOLO categories must be unaccompanied marimba solo music (no backing tracks, piano accompaniment etc).
All repertoire performed for ENSEMBLE categories must be unaccompanied percussion ensemble music (no backing tracks or electronics unless specifically required in the piece), while following the conditions in the section below.
In-person performances will use instruments available at WAAPA. If ensembles require specific instruments unavailable at WAAPA, they are responsible to bring these themselves.
Normal stage etiquette, such as bowing and acknowledgement of the audience are all permitted and encouraged, but Participants will not be penalised if these elements are missing.

FOR ALL ONLINE PERFORMANCES
The rules cited in the FOR ALL IN-PERSON PERFORMANCES section above apply to online video submissions as well.
Videos submitted must be a one-take, unedited (both video and audio), single camera angle video in landscape. Cuts, transitions and any other edits are prohibited.
Videos must not have any other elements other than the performance itself (i.e. no title cards, text banners or other graphics).
Video must be recorded specifically for the use of Marimbafest 2025. Existing and/or public performances may not be used for your submission.
Video submissions must be kept private/unlisted until the end of Marimbafest 2025.

Online video submissions are welcome to use whatever instruments are available to them.
Video and audio quality issues will not affect the outcome of your Faculty Panel feedback and results, however, we recommend you get the best possible video and audio recording quality to ensure the best listening experience for the panel and audience.
If ensembles require specific instruments that are unavailable at their place of recording, they are responsible to organise these themselves.
Normal stage etiquette, such as bowing and acknowledgement of the audience are all permitted and encouraged, but Participants will not be penalised if these elements are missing.

Cannot be self-composed - the composer of the piece is not a director or member of the participating ensemble.
Must not be longer than 10 minutes in length and can be a single movement of a larger work.
If the piece has instruments that are not available at WAAPA, it must be supplied by the ensemble.

The above criteria apply to FIRST, SEMIFINAL and FINAL STAGE performances in the Ensemble category.

FIRST AND SEMIFINAL STAGE PERFORMANCES (SOLO CATEGORIES)
All FIRST and SEMIFINAL STAGE performances must be one solo work, 10 minutes or less in duration (single movements of multi-movement works accepted).
Solo participants may only play repertoire from the correct Repertoire List for their category in FIRST and SEMIFINAL STAGE.
Participants must not perform repertoire outside of their category's Repertoire List in these stages.

SEMIFINAL STAGE performances (live and video) will be held at WAAPA.
Repertoire choices for FIRST and SEMIFINAL STAGE can be the same or different.

FINALIST ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA / PREPARATION REQUIREMENT

To enter FINAL STAGE, a participant must be selected by a majority of their category's Faculty Panel as a Top 4 Finalist (or Top 3 for ENSEMBLE Category).
Finalists must have all necessary FINAL STAGE repertoire for their category ready to perform (see below FINAL STAGE PERFORMANCES).
Finalists who do not have repertoire ready to perform or are physically unable to perform for any reason must inform Marimbafest Team members immediately before the start of FINAL STAGE, so that a suitable replacement Semifinalist can be considered.
Performing without prepared repertoire as a Finalist will result in immediate disqualification and forfeiture of any eligible prizes.
If the above happens, the Faculty Panel will choose another Semifinalist to replace the above Finalist.
If there are no suitable Semifinalists, the remaining Finalists will participate as is for the remaining prizes (see below PRIZE INFORMATION).

FINAL STAGE PERFORMANCES (SOLO CATEGORY)
Solo participants who advance to the FINAL STAGE must play either one or two works depending on their category.
B CLASS Participants must perform one unaccompanied marimba solo of their choice. There is no Compulsory Work for B CLASS.
A CLASS Participants must perform the A CLASS Compulsory Work and one other unaccompanied marimba solo of their choice.

OPEN CLASS Participants must perform the OPEN CLASS Compulsory Work and one other unaccompanied marimba solo of their choice.
Free choice works must be written for unaccompanied marimba only, cannot be self-composed and must be 10 minutes or less.

All FINAL STAGE performances must be different repertoire to any FIRST STAGE and/or SEMIFINAL STAGE choices.
Repertoire chosen does not have to be from a Repertoire List, but can be if desired.

FINAL STAGE PERFORMANCES (ENSEMBLE CATEGORY)
Ensemble participants who advance to the FINAL STAGE must play one ensemble work, with a total duration of under 10 minutes.
The work chosen must follow the same conditions as the
REPERTOIRE CHOICE FOR ENSEMBLE CATEGORY section.
The ensemble members should be the same as the ones who play
ed in the FIRST and SEMIFINAL STAGE.
All FINAL STAGE performances cannot use the same repertoire as FIRST and/or SEMIFINAL STAGE choices.

PRIZE INFORMATION AND DELIBERATION PROCESS

First Prizes, Second Prizes and Third Prizes ('Top Prizes') can only be given to the finalists of Solo B CLASS, A CLASS, Solo OPEN CLASS and the Ensemble Category of the Competition.
Regardless of the number of Finalists in each category, there are only three (3) maximum Top Prizes to be awarded per category,
and in all circumstances a minimum of two (2) Top Prizes must be awarded.
The Panel reserves the right to limit Prizes awarded to a minimum of two (2) Prizes in any given Category if there is insufficient cause for three (3) Prizes to be awarded.
Prizes and awards (e.g. 'Choice Award') other than First, Second and Third are referred to as 'Side Prizes'.

All Side Prizes (other than 'Choice Award' and 'Best Interpretation') can only be given to any Competitors who have not already received a Top Prize.
If the Faculty Panel comes to a majority decision that a Side Prize should not be awarded due to a lack of qualifying Competitors for that Side Prize, the Panel reserves the right to completely remove the Side Prize from the prize pool.

The Faculty Panel's decisions are final and cannot be changed by anyone, including the Chair of the Panel (except in the case of 'failed deliberation' as below).
Participants, Staff and other personnel must not interfere with the judging process in any way.
Any Competitor seen to be using any means of interference (e.g. bribery) will be immediately disqualified and removed from the Festival.

There is to be no tied Prizes. Each prize will only be awarded to one solo Participant or ensemble.
In the event of a tied vote among the Faculty Panel, the Faculty will re-deliberate until a clear outcome is reached.
In the event of a failed deliberation, the Chair of the Panel will end the deliberation process with a clear decision.

GOOD CONDUCT RULES FOR ALL PERFORMANCES
All Participants must uphold a general good standard of behaviour.
Engaging in inappropriate, disruptive, offensive or disorderly conduct towards Participants, Faculty, Staff or other individual is prohibited.
Participants must use appropriate mallets on the instrument that are not exceedingly hard for the register (e.g. very hard mallets in the lowest octave).
Instruments or any other property of WAAPA, Marimbafest Australia or any other parties must not be willfully damaged in any way.
Disruptions to other Participants performances (e.g. making noises, taking photos with flash etc) is prohibited.
FINAL STAGE own choice performances (live and video performances) must not contain inappropriate or offensive content.
Any Participants found to be engaging in any bad conduct as above may be disqualified from the Competition and/or suspended from the Festival.
Participants, as well as any other parties, may spectate, take photos of and record other Competitors whilst they are performing.

Recording and Photography
You may be recorded during your Competition performance for use in promotional materials.
Audience members are permitted to take photos and record Participants' performances.
