Do you only want to watch the concerts?
NO TICKET NEEDED if you just want to watch any of the three FREE Marimbafest public concerts: the Artist Concert (Friday), the Grand Concert (Saturday) and the Gala Concert (Sunday). You don't need to register - just come!
Do you only want to watch certain classes?
If you're only interested in seeing one or two classes, or are on a budget, then our SINGLE ENTRY PASS is for you! All Marimbafest workshops can be observed passively by any non-participants for just $30 per person per workshop. You don't need to register for this option. Simply buy the SINGLE ENTRY PASS at the door of the workshop you wish to go to!
Are you only interested in the Marimba Competition?
If you just want to participate in our Open Marimba Competition and not attend any classes, our affordable COMPETITION ONLY PASS is for you! This lets you participate fully in the Competition, where you will perform solo and potentially win some prizes. You will also receive feedback on your performance from our judging panel to help you with your development as a player. Register below to sign up for the COMPETITION ONLY PASS!

Learn new things about marimba performance and composition by actively participating in all intensive masterclasses and workshops. Showcase your skills and potentially win prizes by participating in the Open Marimba Competition. Rehearse intensively with faculty and perform in public concerts alongside your fellow participants in the Marimbafest Festival Ensemble. Marimbafest 2024 returns for its 5th year - and we have even more options to suit anybody in the percussion world looking for a fun and exciting week!

WHEN AND WHERE IS IT?
Sunday 30th June 2024 afternoon - Saturday 6th July 2024 evening

Visiting in-person participants (from interstate or overseas) should plan to arrive
no later than Saturday 29th June evening and leave no earlier than Sunday 7th July 2024.
AND DO I HAVE TO BE THERE IN-PERSON?
Since Marimbafest 2021, Marimbafests have all been hybrid events -
it's an in-person live event that also offers online participation for people who can't physically make it.
We welcome local, interstate and international participants to participate in-person.
Past Marimbafest participants have loved visiting Perth (Boorloo) for Marimbafest while giving themselves a sunny holiday.
Attendance to all events during the week is recommended but not compulsory (except competition rounds for competing participants).

For interstate and international participants, you may also participate online from the comfort of your own home for ultimate convenience. It's almost like you're here too!

HOW DOES THE COMPETITION WORK?
For our Full Participants of 2024, we have revamped our popular Marimbafest Competition to have
three solo categories (OPEN CLASS, A CLASS and the new B CLASS) and one ensemble category.
The competition has three stages:
FIRST STAGE, SEMIFINAL STAGE and FINAL STAGE.
Please see below for more information:
*Please note all ages listed above are as at 1st January 2024.
Participants who are 15 or under but would like to participate at a more advanced level may participate in A CLASS instead.
Participants who register to enter B CLASS but are deemed too advanced in experience by the Marimbafest Team will be moved up to A CLASS.

EITHER
CHOOSE AN ENSEMBLE PIECE WITH THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS:
Written for minimum 2 to a maximum of 10 players (must be performed by percussionists only)
Has at least one (1) marimba or vibraphone in the instrumentation, and may have non-percussion parts (e.g. narrator, synth) but percussion parts must form at least 80% of the ensemble
Cannot be a marimba/vibraphone solo with only one accompaniment part (e.g. marimba + piano)
Has sheet music in conventional notation (no graphic scores or improvisations)
The sheet music has been published either by a known publisher (e.g. Edition Svitzer, Tapspace) or
by a composer who self-publishes (e.g. Ivan Trevino, Casey Cangelosi)
Cannot be self-composed - the composer of the piece is not a director or member of the participating ensemble
Must not be longer than 10 minutes in length and can be a single movement of a larger work
If the piece has instruments that are not available at WAAPA, it must be supplied by the ensemble

WHAT DO I NEED?
We welcome players of all skill levels and experience backgrounds to participate in Marimbafest.
If you are planning on visiting from interstate or overseas in-person, please refer to our Travel Information page.
Requirements for All Participants
-
FULL Participants: must be minimum 12 years of age and maximum 35 years of age as of 1st January 2024. If a participant is under 12 years of age, they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.

CASUAL Participants: minimum 12 years of age as of 1st January 2024 and no maximum age.

All classes, instruction and feedback during the week will be delivered in English, so English language proficiency is desirable. We also have faculty and staff who can speak Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, Japanese, Spanish and French if required.
Requirements for In-Person Participants

If you are a participant under 18 or require assistance (e.g. mobility or medical condition) , you can be accompanied by a parent or guardian during the event.

If you are feeling unwell during any period of the event, please inform us and stay home to prevent the spread of any illnesses. In-Person Participants may use Online Participant services in the event of no-show due to illness.
Requirements for Online Participants

If you are a participant under 18 or require assistance (e.g. mobility or medical condition) , you can be accompanied by a parent or guardian during livestreamed sessions. If you are not accompanied, we will provide your parent/guardian with a release waiver to sign during the registration process.
Sheet Music And Mallets/Instruments

Sheet music for competition use will be fully paperless - please send us scans of your sheet music with your submissions, as well as a photo of the original score or purchase receipt (if online). Illegally obtained or pirated sheet music will not be accepted.

Please bring any other music you wish to work through with Faculty in workshops.

Instruments will be provided to you, but please bring your own mallets and sticks. If your ensemble requires instruments that are unavailable at WAAPA, you are responsible for providing these at your own expense.
Other Items To Consider

Some meals are included for In-Person Full Participants for 2024 (Sunday reception / Monday + Tuesday + Friday lunch, Saturday lunch + afternoon tea, snacks tea and coffee throughout the week).

In-Person Casual Participants have access to the reception, as well as snacks, tea and coffees only (no lunches).

It is recommended you bring and wear concert outfits of your choice (e.g. neat formal attire) for performances.

Dress code is casual for all other activities.
-
We would recommend bringing something to take notes with, e.g. pen and book or laptop/iPad.
-
Transport is not included, so please organise your own transport to WAAPA. Public transport is easy for participants residing in the Perth CBD and Northbridge areas. Parking is free on weekends only, otherwise there is paid parking available during weekdays 9am-5pm. More information about this is available on our Travel Information page.
Good Conduct Requirements For All Participants

Please maintain a level of courtesy and respect towards all attendees, including participants, faculty members and the staff team.

Marimbafest 2024 is an event for all ages, and all sessions and performances have been cleared for all audiences.

Please refrain from any inappropriate conduct including profanity and offensive behaviour towards attendees.

Please maintain a level of silence during competition performances and refrain from interfering or interrupting other attendees.

Please respect and treat all campus and private property, including instruments, equipment and other belongings with care.

Photography and videography of performances and classes is allowed and you will be photographed and video recorded by our team members during the week.

Any breaches of the above rules will be met with the participant being removed from Marimbafest week, and more serious breaches will be referred to the appropriate authorities.

WHAT DO I NEED
2024 SOLO & ENSEMBLE FULL COMPETITION RULES
BELOW ARE THE DETAILED COMPETITION RULES FOR MARIMBAFEST 2024'S SOLO & ENSEMBLE COMPETITION.
BY PARTICIPATING YOU AGREE TO THE FOLLOWING:
GENERAL
Marimbafest Australia (ABN 73 174 511 591) is the operator of this Competition.
All decisions regarding prizes and winners are at the Faculty Panel's discretion.
The live rounds will be held at the Richard Gill Auditorium, Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (hereinafter referred to as 'WAAPA').
Online competitors will have their videos played on screen with amplification at WAAPA.
Only ticket holders who have successfully registered prior to 1st May 2024 may participate in the Competition as 'Participants'.
No late entries will be accepted.
2024 COMPETITION CATEGORIES (SOLO AND ENSEMBLE)
The SOLO Category must be participated by a solo (1 person) Participant.
The ENSEMBLE Category must be participated by a group of Participants of two (2) or more Participants, with a maximum of 10 Participants.
Participants may enter both Solo and Ensemble categories simultaneously once each.
Multiple entries in the same category will not be accepted.
Participants must be at the age of 12 or older (younger is permitted with parental supervision), with a maximum age of 35 as at 1 January 2023.
2024 SOLO COMPETITION CLASSES (B CLASS, A CLASS AND OPEN CLASS)
The B CLASS is eligible to Competitors who are at the age of 15 or under as of 1st January 2024.
Participants who are eligible for B CLASS but are deemed too advanced in skill level will be automatically moved to A CLASS.
The A CLASS is eligible to Competitors who are at the age of 18 or under as of 1st January 2024.
The OPEN CLASS is eligible to all Participants without restriction.
All Participants can participate in one CLASS only.
Participants are only eligible for the Prizes and Awards for their respective CLASS.
COMPETITION PROCESS
All Participants (in-person and online) will submit videos for FIRST STAGE for their respective CLASS.
Participants who pass FIRST STAGE will proceed to SEMIFINAL STAGE and perform/have their videos played in live semifinals in their respective CLASS.
All SEMIFINAL STAGE Participants will be given written feedback and ranked by the Faculty Panel.
The TOP 3 Participants from each Solo CLASS and Top 2 Participants from the ENSEMBLE Category will perform in the FINAL STAGE in their respective CLASS and CATEGORY (eleven (11) total 'Finalists').
The TOP 3 Finalists for each CLASS (eleven (11) total) will be ranked according to the Faculty Panel's decisions.
FOR ALL IN-PERSON PERFORMANCES
Marimbafest Australia supports the practice of using original copies and editions of sheet music.
Using pirated or illegally obtained sheet music for adjudicator's copies will result in disqualification from the competition.
Other than purchasing the score, sheet music obtained via legal sources such as library loan, educational institution loan or loan from a teacher are acceptable.
All Participants are permitted to use sheet music on stage if required, whether in print form or electronic form (e.g. iPad/tablet).
Any sheet music used must be either the original published copy, or photocopies/digital copies with a prior sighted original copy/purchase receipt.
Participants must not perform a work different to their initial choices of repertoire, unless given prior permission to do so.
All repertoire performed for SOLO categories must be unaccompanied marimba solo music (no backing tracks, piano accompaniment etc).
All repertoire performed for ENSEMBLE categories must be unaccompanied percussion ensemble music (no backing tracks or electronics unless specifically required in the piece), while following the conditions in the section below.
In-person performances will use instruments available at WAAPA.
If ensembles require specific instruments unavailable at WAAPA, they are responsible to bring these themselves.
Normal stage etiquette, such as bowing and acknowledgement of the audience are all permitted and encouraged,but Participants will not be penalised if these elements are missing.
FOR ALL ONLINE PERFORMANCES
The rules cited in the FOR ALL IN-PERSON PERFORMANCES section above apply to online video submissions as well.
Videos submitted must be a one-take, unedited (both video and audio), single camera angle video in landscape. Cuts, transitions and any other edits are prohibited.
Videos must not have any other elements other than the performance itself (i.e. no title cards, text banners or other graphics).
Video must be recorded specifically for the use of Marimbafest 2024. Public live performances may not be used for your submission.
Online video submissions are welcome to use whatever instruments are available to them.
Video and audio quality issues will not affect the outcome of your Faculty Panel feedback and results, however, we recommend you get the best possible video and audio recording quality to ensure the best listening experience for the panel and audience.
If ensembles require specific instruments that are unavailable at their place of recording, they are responsible to organise these themselves.

REPERTOIRE CHOICE FOR ENSEMBLE CATEGORY
For all stages in the Ensemble category, there is no set repertoire list, but Participants may refer to the Ensemble Repertoire List for suggestions if needed.
Repertoire chosen must follow the following criteria:
Written for minimum 2 to a maximum of 10 players (must be performed by percussionists only)
Has at least one (1) marimba or vibraphone in the instrumentation,
and may have non-percussion parts (e.g. narrator, synth) but percussion parts must form at least 80% of the ensemble.
Cannot be a marimba/vibraphone solo with only one accompaniment part (e.g. marimba + piano).
Has sheet music in conventional notation (no graphic scores or improvisations).
The sheet music has been published either by a known publisher (e.g. Edition Svitzer, Tapspace) or
by a composer who self-publishes (e.g. Ivan Trevino, Casey Cangelosi).
Cannot be self-composed - the composer of the piece is not a director or member of the participating ensemble.
Must not be longer than 10 minutes in length and can be a single movement of a larger work.
If the piece has instruments that are not available at WAAPA, it must be supplied by the ensemble.
The above criteria apply to FIRST, SEMIFINAL and FINAL STAGE performances in the Ensemble category.
FIRST AND SEMIFINAL STAGE PERFORMANCES (SOLO CATEGORIES)
All FIRST and SEMIFINAL STAGE performances must be one solo work, 10 minutes or less in duration (single movements of multi-movement works accepted).
Solo participants may only play repertoire from the Repertoire List for FIRST and SEMIFINAL STAGE.
B CLASS can play any repertoire from the B CLASS Repertoire List.
A CLASS Participants can play any repertoire from either A CLASS or OPEN CLASS Repertoire List.
OPEN CLASS Participants can only perform repertoire from the OPEN CLASS Repertoire List regardless of age.
FIRST STAGE videos must be uploaded to YouTube in unlisted format, with no video or audio editing used.
SEMIFINAL STAGE performances (live and video) will be held at WAAPA.
Repertoire choices for FIRST and SEMIFINAL STAGE can be the same or different (but must be from the List).
FIRST AND SEMIFINAL STAGE PERFORMANCES (OPEN CLASS ENSEMBLE CATEGORY)
All repertoire choices for the Ensemble Category should follow the rules of the REPERTOIRE CHOICE FOR ENSEMBLE CATEGORY section above.
FIRST STAGE videos must be uploaded to YouTube in unlisted format, with no video or audio editing used.
SEMIFINAL STAGE performances (live and video) will be held at WAAPA.
Repertoire choices for FIRST and SEMIFINAL STAGE can be the same or different.
FINAL STAGE PERFORMANCES (SOLO CATEGORY)
Solo participants who advance to the FINAL STAGE must play two solo works. Own choice works must not be longer than 10 minutes.
B CLASS Participants must perform one unaccompanied marimba solo of their choice. There is no Compulsory Work for B CLASS.
A CLASS Participants must perform the A CLASS Compulsory Work and one other unaccompanied marimba solo of their choice.
OPEN CLASS Participants must perform the OPEN CLASS Compulsory Work and one other unaccompanied marimba solo of their choice.
Free choice works cannot be self-composed.
All FINAL STAGE performances cannot use the same repertoire as FIRST STAGE and/or SEMIFINAL STAGE
Performances do not have to be from the respective Repertoire List, but can be if desired.
FINAL STAGE PERFORMANCES (ENSEMBLE CATEGORY)
Ensemble participants who advance to the FINAL STAGE must play one ensemble work, with a total duration of under 10 minutes.
The work chosen must follow the same conditions as the REPERTOIRE CHOICE FOR OPEN CLASS ENSEMBLE CATEGORY section.
The ensemble members should be the same as the ones who played in the FIRST and SEMIFINAL STAGE.
All FINAL STAGE performances cannot use the same repertoire as FIRST and/or SEMIFINAL STAGE.
GOOD CONDUCT RULES FOR ALL PERFORMANCES
All Participants must uphold a general good standard of behaviour.
Engaging in inappropriate, disruptive, offensive or disorderly conduct towards Participants, Faculty, Staff or other individual is prohibited.
Participants must use appropriate mallets on the instrument that are not exceedingly hard for the register (e.g. very hard mallets in the lowest octave).
Instruments or any other property of WAAPA, Marimbafest Australia or any other parties must not be willfully damaged in any way.
Disruptions to other Participants performances (e.g. making noises, taking photos with flash etc) is prohibited.
FINAL STAGE own choice performances (live and video performances) must not contain inappropriate or offensive content.
Any Participants found to be engaging in any bad conduct as above may be disqualified from the Competition and/or suspended from the Festival.
Participants, as well as any other parties, may spectate, take photos of and record other Competitors whilst they are performing.
PRIZE INFORMATION
First Prizes, Second Prizes and Third Prizes can only be given to the finalists of Solo B CLASS, A CLASS, Solo OPEN CLASS and the Ensemble Category of the Competition.
All additional prizes (other than 'Choice Award' and 'Best Interpretation') can be given to any Competitors who have not already received First, Second or Third Prize.
The Faculty Panel's decisions are final and cannot be changed.
Participants, Staff and other personnel must not interfere with the judging process in any way.
In the event a FINAL STAGE Competitor (or Competitors) is/are unable to perform in FINAL STAGE, the Faculty Panel will choose the next best Participant(s) from SEMIFINAL STAGE to replace them. Once this happens, the original FINAL STAGE Participant(s) is/are removed from FINAL STAGE and cannot return.
If a finalist is physically able to perform but does not successfully complete the performance, they will automatically be awarded the lowest prize available.
There is to be no tied Prizes. Each prize will only be awarded to one solo Participant or ensemble.
In the event of a tied vote among the Faculty Panel, the Faculty will re-deliberate until a clear outcome is reached.
Recording and Photography
You may be recorded during your Competition performance for use in promotional materials.
Audience members are permitted to take photos and record Participants' performances.
Flash photography and use of any other lighting equipment is not permitted.
Recording devices must be silent while being used in order to not disturb Competitors.
Changes and Cancellation
These Rules are subject to change at any time by the Marimbafest Australia staff team in exceptional circumstances.
In the event of emergency circumstances such as serious medical emergency, natural and man-made disasters etc, the event may be rescheduled or cancelled.
