EVENT SUMMARY

NEW FOR MARIMBAFEST 2023: New location + full (all events) and casual participant (no competition, only masterclasses) options available + new faculty members!

Marimbafest 2023, our 4th instalment of Marimbafest, continues on from our successful 2021 and 2022 hybrid events to our new home at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in Mount Lawley, Perth, Western Australia.

Marimbafest 2023 will have an all-star faculty and staff team lineup, including some of our returning faculty from earlier editions, as well as some fresh new faces!

Joining us this year will be Dr Matthew Lau (Hong Kong/USA), Kana Omori (Japan), Ivan Trevino* (USA), Spectrum Ensemble* - Jaime Esposito and SA Hall (USA), Dr Christopher Thompson aka Master Christopher* (USA), Rosie Cerquone* (USA), Robert Oetomo (Australia), Adam Tan (Australia), Paul Tanner (Australia), Mercedes Slack-Smith (Australia).

Artists marked with * will deliver their masterclasses and performances online.

Our faculty hail from around the world and represent many different disciplines and areas of expertise, with classes covering marimba solo performance, ensemble performance, vibraphone, musician's health, composition, education, singing-songwriting, hip-hop composing, rudimental snare drum, career guidance and more - so there's lots to learn!

And remember you can participate IN-PERSON OR ONLINE - so you can participate either at WAAPA or from the comfort of your home - and you can also choose to participate fully or just attend our classes (casual participant)! We have heaps of options to suit everyone.

Marimbafest 2023 week will consist of:

· Two CATEGORIES of competition: SOLO (1 player, solo marimba) and ENSEMBLE (2-10 players, chamber ensemble)

· Two CLASSES of competition: A CLASS (under the age of 18 on 1 July 2023) and OPEN CLASS (all ages)

· All participants receive valuable feedback and can potentially win prizes (we've given over $20,000 of prizes in the last two years - and online participants will have prizes shipped!)

· Masterclasses for participants during the week from the faculty artists covering areas like technique, performance, composition, career and more

· Free exciting concerts all week featuring the participants, faculty artists and local artists

· A bigger Marimbafest Shop for all your percussion gear needs

· Opportunities to meet other percussionists from around the world with lunches provided + social opportunities
